Vibe coding makes it sound effortless and my stress levels and sleepless nights tell a different story.

I've been 'vibe coding' for about a year now, building both client projects and Ghostart itself, and it's a skill like any other.

Different from traditional coding? Of course. Brainless or something anyone can do? Not so much.

If you think you just describe what you want and AI waves its magic wand, boom, you have a fully functional product... think again. That's absolutely not how it works.

Well, for small, simple projects? Sure. Tools like Lovable or Replit can knock out something impressive for you, even if you've barely written a line of code before.

But scaling up to something substantial? That's where it gets properly complicated.

I'm not a coder by background but I've managed tech development projects, so I know the unglamorous reality: the setup, the planning, the architecture, the documentation. All that groundwork still matters when you're building something complex with AI.

Skip it, and your project will collapse under its own weight.

Here's 3 things I've learned the hard way:

1. You can't wing the structure.

AI will happily generate code all day long, but without clear documentation and a solid plan, you'll end up with a tangled mess that's impossible to debug or scale.

2. Different AI models have different strengths.

GPT5 is great for logic and debugging and, unlike Claude, it doesn't talk to me like it's Ron Weasley, it's more functional which I like... but when it comes to design work, even with a comprehensive style guide, it's Microsoft compared to Apple... so I always switch to Claude Sonnet 4.5 whenever I need actual design integrity.

3. Project management skills matter more than coding skills.

Knowing what to build, how to break it down and how to communicate requirements clearly beats knowing syntax every time. Vibe coding is a shortcut of sorts, but it's a skill in its own right.

It's a different skillset, one that combines traditional project discipline with knowing how to work with AI, not just prompt it.

Oh, and when your AI goes off book and starts offering you tweaks and improvements, take Zammo's advice and Just Say No.
