How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT answers?

There's no fixed timeline for showing up in ChatGPT answers, and Ghostart won't give you a number we can't stand behind.

There's no fixed timeline for showing up in ChatGPT answers, and Ghostart won't give you a number we can't stand behind. ChatGPT draws on two sources that move at different speeds: a training snapshot that changes slowly, and live search that can reflect changes sooner.

The honest working rhythm is to ask ChatGPT the same question once a month, log what changed, and treat the pattern as the answer. Nothing here is guaranteed.

Why is there no fixed timeline?

ChatGPT's answers come from two places, and your business sits differently in each.

The first is the model itself, trained on a snapshot of the web with a cut-off date. Anything it absorbed before that date is baked in: an old address, a product you've retired, a co-founder who left.

You can't update that directly. It only shifts when OpenAI releases a new model, and no one outside OpenAI knows when that will be.

The second is live search. When ChatGPT looks something up, it uses its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) and third-party search providers that OpenAI doesn't name. Changes to your site or your other public listings can reach this source faster than they reach the model.

But OpenAI's own help page says the results "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect", so faster isn't the same as reliable.

What can you change while you wait?

You can't edit what ChatGPT says, and there's no business profile to claim or correction form to submit. What you can change is what it reads.

  • Check robots.txt. If your site blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT won't use your pages in its answers.
  • Put the facts in plain text. What you do, who for, where, prices if you publish them, who runs the business. Keep them on your site as text, not buried in a PDF or an image.
  • Fix the stale copies elsewhere. ChatGPT reads your Google Business Profile, Companies House or equivalent, LinkedIn, old directory listings and press pieces still carrying a previous positioning. An outdated answer usually traces back to one of them.

These changes give live search better material. They don't set a date by which ChatGPT will name you.

How often should you re-check?

Ask the same question once a month, word for word, and write down what you find. Monthly is a realistic rhythm because live search needs time to pick up changes, and a daily check mostly records noise.

A useful log has five columns:

  • The date
  • The exact wording you asked
  • Whether your business was named
  • Who was named instead
  • Which sources the answer pointed to

One answer isn't a verdict. A University of St. Gallen paper by Schulte, Bleeker and Kaufmann (arXiv:2604.07585) found that only 34–42% of cited sources overlap between consecutive days.

A single check is a snapshot, and the log is what turns snapshots into a trend.

The log also keeps cause and effect honest. If you changed a listing in March and appeared in April, you have a change and an observation, recorded separately. You don't have proof that one caused the other.

Can anyone guarantee a ChatGPT mention?

No. AI tools don't keep a universal list of businesses they recommend. Their answers depend on who's asking, what they're looking for and what information the AI has available, so two people asking similar questions can get different answers from the same tool.

Better information improves the chance of being considered. It doesn't guarantee the outcome.

Ghostart can measure where your business appears, identify gaps and help you address them, but we don't promise that doing so will make an AI recommend you.

How does Ghostart do the re-checking for you?

Ghostart samples up to six AI answer engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude and Google AI Mode. Starter covers four of them, and Claude and AI Mode unlock at Basic.

Every paid plan asks each tracked question in three different phrasings, rotated weekly, so a result isn't down to the luck of one wording. Starter re-checks monthly. Basic and Growth re-check core questions weekly, with the wider set, site crawl and digest monthly.

When you get cited for a question, we propose three to five adjacent questions to track next. Nothing is added until a person approves it.

Where should you start?

Start with the missed-questions map. It shows the questions where your business is missing from AI answers and who gets named instead, which gives your first log entry a baseline. From there, we publish with you, check again every month, and show you what moved.
