Most people think influence happens overnight.
One viral post, one big break, one moment of recognition... and suddenly you're an industry leader.
But after watching hundreds of professionals build their presence over the past few years, I've noticed influence actually unfolds in predictable stages.
Understanding where you are in this journey changes everything about your strategy.
Most professionals get stuck between stages 3 and 4 in the 10 stages of influence below.
The 10 Stages of Professional Influence:
1. Invisible: Great work, zero visibility
2. Lurker: Consuming content, not creating
3. Tester: First tentative posts, minimal engagement
4. Consistent: Regular posting rhythm established
5. Recognised: People start knowing your name
6. Trusted: Others seek your perspective
7. Amplified: Your content gets shared widely
8. Sought: Speaking/collaboration requests arrive
9. Referenced: Others quote your ideas
10. Influential: You shape industry conversations
Stages 1-4 are about building your foundation, not your reputation.
You're developing your voice, understanding your audience, and creating the body of work that will later compound into real influence.
You need to understand that influence isn't about having all the answers, it's about asking better questions and sharing the journey.
Which stage resonates with where you are right now? And more importantly, what's one small action you could take this week to move to the next level?
